District court judge orders Los Angeles to provide housing to the homeless

Those living under bridges and freeways are at high risk of not just Covid-19 but also other dangers. They are exposed to lead, pollution and face dangers of car accidents and earthquakes. U.S. District Court Judge David O. Carter issued a preliminary injunction requiring the roughly 6-7,000 people living under freeways and bridges be relocated by September 1st. The judge says these people are facing a health risk emergency. The injunction also requests a status report to be ready by June 12th.

Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority reported that in 2019, there were close to 60,000 homeless across the county if Los Ángeles.

A state program was established to get thousands of homeless off the streets. The county is already renting rooms under the Project Roomkey but those rooms are reserved for those 65 and older.  Thanks to a lawsuit by the LA Alliance for Human Rights, the ordinance was issued by Judge Carter.
