Atlanta is transforming a city jail to a center for equity

Last year, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms signed legislation that closes the Atlanta City Detention Center (ACDC) so that it can be transformed into a Center for Justice and Equity. This will be the first ever jail to equity center in the United States. A task force was established to help with the process of repurposing ACDC. They hold meetings with the mayor, to provide recommendations for the new center.

Throughout the process, the community has been engaged and providing feedback on the transformation. The Atlanta City Detention Center is 11 stories with 471,000 square feet. The goal of the new Center for Equity is to “advance racial and economic equity, promote restorative justice, and invest in the well-being of individuals, families and communities.”
