There’s a new sweetener in town and it’s made of recycled apples and pears

We are currently living in an environmentally friendly revolution. Companies around the world are strategizing ways to be more environmentally friendly. Now there’s a new Dutch company that’s turning leftovers from apples and pears into a chemical-free sweetener. Fooditive is the name of the company founded by food scientist Moayad Abushokhedim in Rotterdam, the Netherlands just a couple years ago.  company also takes the pieces of fruit that are considered “unfit for supermarkets” to make their sweetener. That’s the fruit with brown spots or off colors. The fruit is sourced from local Dutch farmers and the natural fructose is extracted through a fermentation process.

What’s the final product? A calorie-free sweetener. That’s not all the company makes. They also sell all-natural preserving agents, thickening agents that are made out of banana skins and emulsifiers. Through their collaboration with Netherlands company Rotterdam Circulair, their goal is to establish a circular economy in the city of Rotterdam by 2030. Rotterdam Circulair is an organization committed to reusing, reducing and recycling.
