Canada announces new marine protected area in the Arctic Ocean

Thanks to an agreement reached between the Canadian government and Qikiqtani Inuit Assocation (QIA), Tuvaijuittuq will now be protected from industrial activity. The agreement closes off water from mining, oil, and gas extraction, dumping, and fishing with a method called trawling. Aside from keeping industrial activity out of the area, Canada will also create new jobs in research and data collection.

Canada also announced the official establishment of the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area. Environmentalists believe this will turn this area into a refuge for wildlife like polar bears and walruses. The area is known for being a place that ice never melts and Canada plans on keeping it that way!
